The Catastrophic Mudslide in Sierra Leone

Monday the 14th of August 2017: Residents of the low land valley of Sugar Loaf Mountain, Freetown, Sierra Leone awoke into an avalanche of mudslides; tons and tons of mudslide from the towering mountain falling with unbelievable rapidity on the underlying houses and people. "Half the mountain came down!" said a survivor.

When the mudslides eventually subsided, about 500 persons were reported dead and hundreds still missing.

For an event such as this, we, human beings are quick to blame the Almighty God. Some among us would say that He made it happen to punish the affected people for their sins. While some continuously blame Him, others question; how, He, the Almighty could allow such things if He truly loves us.

But I say unto you, in events like this, it's most important that man sees the Goodness and Love of the Almighty in it and as a matter of course draw the critical lesson that cannot but accompany such an event.

In accord with the unwavering Natural Laws woven into creation by the Almighty Father, there are bound to be what we know as catastrophes; earthquakes, mudslides, tsunamis; etc resulting directly from man's exploitative usage of nature; land, sea, meadow, forest etc., with the accompanying removal of the natural protections, wetlands, dunes and trees in blatant disregard for preservation and sustenance of nature, or by nature's self-purification also necessitated by man's exploitation.

I make bold to say that in such events, the Wisdom and Love of the Almighty always provide for help and warnings.

Available records show that illegal constructions on this valley and surroundings of Sugar Loaf Mountain, started in 2006. At that time what we now know to be a help towards preventing this disaster came in a Government Policy prohibiting constructions in this area and in a man; Mr. Kenneth Moore, a Ministry of Land employee charged with enforcing the policy by the minister; Bobson Sesay. Mr. Moore approached his duty with all seriousness. He was reported to have refused all forms of attempted bribery and ordered all construction works to stop, but the contractors and all involved refused.

On the 13th. of June 2006, Kenneth Moore moved on to the site, with demolition equipments and a vehicle loaded with police officers. The police were under an order to demolish the illegal structures and they embarked on their mission. Although some level of resistance was anticipated but nobody could have imagined what happened on that fateful day..The contractors, the builders and residents allegedly descended on the law enforcement officers, stoning, clubbing and beating them. Kenneth Moore was reportedly captured, beaten and killed by the mob.

Thus the one meant to help was allegedly killed by the very people he was meant to help.

The Goodness, Love and Wisdom of the Almighty never leave us high and dry without warnings when disaster approaches. Not to understand this is equivalent to "Not to understand" the Almighty our God. His other creatures who live perpetually in His Will would always be sent to warn and counsel.

Think of the animals in the areas affected by this mudslide and other areas devastated by hurricanes, tornados and etc. What happened to them? Certainly there were animals in the valleys and creeks around Mountain Sugar Loaf...But never did we see a report of a significant number of animals being swept away by the mudslide.

So what happened to the animals? Most certainly they must have fled the area before the mudslide. How do they know when to flee?

Surely we must have heard numerous accounts of animals fleeing an area, shortly before a landslide, tsunamis, hurricanes or the like hits the area. The Indian Ocean Tsunami of December 26th 2004 readily comes to mind. The tsunami and the earthquake which caused it were reported to have caused over 230,000 deaths but animals in the area were reportedly seen fleeing onto higher ground before the tsunami.

Right here at home, this writer vividly remember Sunday the 29th.of October 2012 afternoon, shortly before hurricane Sandy struck. Coming back to our residence in the Rockaways from the Hour of Worship my wife noted the ghostly quietness; the ever present singing birds, the running squirrels, the stray cats; all were nowhere in sight. She strongly advised, we take a cue from these animals and evacuate as directed by the mayor but I was not convinced that the situation would be as bad as predicted. So we did not evacuate. To say that I later regretted this decision would be an understatement. I did with pains and anguish and I learned my lesson.... Such is man.

So how do animals know when to flee? Man called it a sixth sense.

But no, animals do not possess such a sixth sense...

Through the Grail Message, now here with us, we now know that animals simply hearken to warnings given them by the ever loyal, faithful servants of the Almighty working in His Will around us. Humans beings were warned just like the animals, but man of today has either sunk so low, that we are now incapable of perceiving our own helpers giving such warnings or we are too stubborn to listen to them even when we can perceive them.

But as human beings we cannot take a judgmental position, stand as; "holier than thou", and say that those affected by the mudslides or other catastrophes are reaping the fruits of their disobedience and thus refuse to help them when we are in a position to do so. That would be judgmental and wrong. Only the Almighty can judge. Who among us has never done wrong? We must follow the lead of the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ; Even when He saw us failing, He was still pleading for help for us.
