“And the devil said unto him, if thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.”  (Luke 4, Verse 3, KJV).

“And the devil, taking him up into a high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time…..

…And the devil said unto him. All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will, I give it.    If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine”  (Luke 4, Verses 5-7, KJV).

..“And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him:  If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence”. (Luke 4, Verse 9, KJV)

A better pictorial illustration of the activities and power of the intellect in our world could not have been given.  Like every passage in the Bible, one can only find the key to its true meaning if one examines it from a spiritual point of view.  Of course, it’s grotesquely unimaginable that a Part of the Almighty is physically being led place to place by the tempter or the devil as the Bible called him.   It’s an absolute impossibility.   The only inroad for the tempter to reach Jesus in the physical is through the only tool available to him:  the intellect which Jesus too has to bear here on earth because He needed it in accord with the Will of His Father ,

“If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.”

There is no other appropriate  word to describe this happening other than the one given in the Bible: “Temptation”.  The Lord Jesus Christ strongly sensed His Divine origin and its accompanying Power breaking forth in Him. He sensed the unparalleled magnitude of this Power, Its creative ability and the love inherent in It. With this came a deep perception of the nature of man and the effect that this Power would have on him.

The tempter took advantage of this most vulnerable period in the life of the Lord on earth.

The tempter took advantage of this most vulnerable period in the life of the Lord on earth. The period when a conscious sensing of His Divine origin and the recognition of His High Mission were beginning to break forth in Him!   Once a full recognition sinks in and the Lord stands rooted in this consciousness, it would be absolutely impossible for the tempter to approach Him much less reach Him.

Now, anyone striving to understand the Lord would clearly sense His inner restlessness at this time.  But none can experience it as He did.  He clearly perceived His Divine Power and His high mission. At the same time He clearly saw the hardship and thorns on His path towards accomplishing His mission: making the Will of His Father known to men.  Now at this same time, the intellect, behind it Lucifer inseparably connected with it pushes itself to the forefront and cunningly pointed to what he painted as an easier path…..

Take me as your Lord. Do as I command. You can make whatever you desire happen if truly you are the Son of God.  Do it, even the ones you sensed to be impossibilities within the Laws of your Father…and you would readily be rewarded with the control of this earthly kingdom.  Why go through the coming pains and hardship?

 Herein lies the temptation.

A temptation is obviously meant to harm and never to help.

Of course the tempter knows the Laws. His whole scheme was to tempt the Lord onto pitching the budding conviction of His Divine origin and Its inherent Power against accomplishing feats which he himself knows are absolutely impossible within the Natural Laws; so that a failure would automatically undermine the Lord Jesus Christ before mankind. Thus he would have destroyed the Saviour’s work of salvation before He can even start it.

The experience was sharp and momentary in the Lord, for He immediately recognized it for what it was and what was lurking behind it. Sharp and stern, the Divine Wisdom rebuked Lucifer…And of course, upon His command; Lucifer had to retreat from this Pillar of Light walking on earth.
