        The Tower of Babel

PERFECT is God Almighty. He is Justice, Love and Purity in His Activities.  His Divine Love permeates all that came into existence through His Will.  One who reflects on the nature of the Almighty cannot but see that: He, Who is Life and the Light cannot bear the attributes of the darkness. It is absolutely impossible.

Most certainly the nature of Perfection, Love and Purity remain unchanged from eternity to  eternity. But can one take the following account literally and see the perfection, purity and love  of  the Almighty?

"Now the whole earth had one language and few words. And as men migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.' And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.' And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men had built. And the LORD said, 'Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; and nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.' So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth and they left off building the city.' Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth."   (Genesis 11:1-9) (KJV).

A little reflection on the nature of the Almighty God as shown us in His Works would tell us that the experience described herein is not meant to be taken literally, but allegorically; for the One Who is Love and Who gave us the Ten Commandments through Moses in which upholding peaceful, harmonious co-existence in His household brightly radiates cannot at the same time bear the idea of throwing confusion among His creatures.

Such a thought is grossly unhealthy.   It’s pathetic that man can think of his Creator this way.   Interpreting this passage literarily shows conspiracy to cause disharmony and confusion. This clearly is an attribute of the darkness, completely alien to the Light. The Lord indeed desires that we live, work in harmony in His creation and approach His kingdom as taught in the Ten Commandments, received by Moses and the Divine Teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What in essence are we being given in this passage?

It is a fact that the Bible is primarily a spiritual book.  All experiences narrated in It are given in pictures for our understanding.

As always man has brought the true interpretation of this account down to his earthly level.  As such its deep meaning and thus the lessons meant to be learned from it remained mysteries to us.

To understand the essence of the message being given to mankind in this narrative, one must look for the key to our inability to understand each other. How did it happen that two brothers speaking the same language cannot understand one another anymore?

The concept of a tower being built and meant to go high up on to the Almighty is symbolical. What mankind embarked on building and he is still building today is, that seat of deceit and arrogance; the intellect. Out of his free will, man decided to build up his intellect.  And he continues to build it.  Now it is an albatross, standing today as the lord of the gifts given him by the Almighty as tools for his usage here on earth; including the one meant to take the lead over it  in its activities.

With a constant and rigorous use, the intellect grows until it becomes more powerful than the part of the brain from which it was supposed to receive guidance, the part that links it with the Source of Life.

Now devoid of guidance from the Light, the intellect was seized by that which is rooted in the material world; the darkness. It cannot but become the agent through which the darkness propagate all its attributes; deceit, lying, arrogance, conspiracy etc. Mankind began to deceive one another. We learned to conceal our true volition and intention behind empty words. We learned to say one thing, while we meant another. Our words are completely different from our true volitions.  Brothers cannot understand brothers.  Sisters cannot understand sisters.

This is the real disruption of language.   It’s only when one knows that this Biblical passage is meant to convey the loss of our ability to understand  each other that its deep meaning became apparent to one.

The Almighty needs not say “Let’s confuse their language.”   Upon man’s decision to over-cultivate his intellect to the detriment of the back brain which was meant to link him with impressions from his spiritual home, the die is cast!  It’s automatic that the rudderless intellect becomes a tool in the hand of the darkness.

Indeed, the key is in the passage itself.  It speaks of a decision to build a tower reaching high into the heavens. This is arrogance and conceit at the highest level. Only the intellect and the intellectuals developing in the wrong direction can express themselves thus.
